Guide to Paperback Book Protection

By Brodart

It's easy to choose the right protective cover for your paperback collection. Just ask yourself a few simple questions.

Do you need reusable or permanent paperback covers?

Reusable covers can be applied over your book covers without permanently altering or adhering to the book in any way. These are available in adjustable widths and are easy to apply. They can also be removed without damaging the book and reapplied to other books of the same size.

Permanent covers are usually self-adhesive and are applied to your paperback book covers, therefore permanently altering the book. These covers require trimming for an exact fit. They feature a delay-bond adhesive and pre-scored release liner for easy application; they cannot be removed without damaging the book.

If you choose permanent paperback covers, would you prefer them to be rigid or flexible?

Rigid covers protect your paperbacks while adding stiffness to the covers, giving them a "hardback” quality so the books will stand up better on shelves. Rigid laminate covers are recommended for large size non-fiction paperbacks that are shelved along with other permanent hardback books.

Flexible covers offer protection to your paperback book covers while still retaining that “paperback” flexibility. These covers work well on very short term use paperbacks, such as annually updated editions or popular author "trade" paperback books.

What type of film material do you prefer?

Vinyl (PVC) has the advantage of being very soft so it conforms easily to your paperbacks, and it is also the least expensive. Polyester film is chemically stable, acid-free and very strong with high internal strength; polyester is recommended for archival use. Polypropylene film is economical, chemically stable, acid-free, soft and flexible. All of these film types are available in a variety of thicknesses, and some offer a choice of clear or matte finish.
