Case Study
Library Connection @ Adams Square

Glendale’s newest library branch, The Library Connection @
Adams square was challenged by a lack of open space and unusual dimensions. The
Library Connection @ Adams Square occupies a roughly 2,000 sq. ft. reused space
in a former open-air market. The semi-circular space is almost completely
surrounded by windows, claiming the most suitable area for shelving. The
semi-transparent shelving system was custom-developed for this project from
laser-cut acrylic and occupies the windows as a dual-sided display of books,
magazines, and materials to the interior and exterior.
The project realizes an evolving paradigm for libraries, changing from
stack-centered and spatially intensive to resource-driven, time-based, and
community-oriented. At the same time, the project emphasizes functionality,
innovation and cost-efficiency. The satellite location was designed to
accommodate today’s library patrons while positioning it to become a central
location and rich resource for Glendale’s Adams Square community.
The final design proposes a new model of public library wherein community
interface becomes the dominant agenda. Programmatically, the Glendale Public
Library visualized a library wherein the collection was entirely flexible,
drawing from the Central Library, content that was needed or wanted by the
community. The design amplifies the fluid relationship between an institution
and its stakeholders through material transparency.
