Serving the library community with professional development
and decision point resources
Look up the word resiliency in the dictionary and read the various definitions: Bounce back immediately as a better version of yourself, stronger than ever! Recovery from tragedy, refreshed and renewed! Hardiness! Strength! Plasticity! Meanwhile, in these stressful days with most of us working from home, most mortals like you and me are grateful if we remember to brush our teeth and get dressed before noon. These are strange days, my friends!
Let’s redefine it…Resiliency, among other things, is:
Figuring out how to finish a project when you’re the only one to show up while still maintaining a good relationships with the people who let you down. Admitting with grace that you messed up and volunteering to make it right. Being able to accept help from others, and, at the same time, be generous, without expecting reciprocity. Investing in relationships for mutual aid. Finding your own purpose in life to keep you anchored when things go haywire. And being able to dust yourself off and continue. Again, and again.
Presenter: Pat Wagner has been a library trainer and consultant for over 40 years, working with libraries and allied institutions of all types and sizes. She learned about resiliency growing up in an extended immigrant family where stories were share, with irreverent laughter, about surviving bad times and celebrating the good.
